Kayak Fishing

The Outer Banks Fishing School offers year-round soundside kayak fishing trips in the Currituck, Roanoke, Croatan and upper Pamlico sounds. These trips are conducted by professional kayak fishing guides certified by the American Canoe Association as instructors or day trip guides. Equally important, each guide is a local angler with extensive fishing experience in the Outer Banks.

Based on the location of fish, wind, temperature; water color, clarity and salinty, your OBFS guide will select a launching location which will put you in water usually no deeper than ten feet. Fishing locations include sandy islands, grass marsh "ditches" (creeks), open water or around bridges or other above surface structures. Every effort will be made to launch relatively close to the fishing area so as to provide more fishing time and less paddling time although there will always be enough paddling to enjoy your kayak and the natural environment.

While we can't guarantee fish, our guides fish nearly every day and have the distinct advantage of a network of other local anglers, charter Captains and guides who exchange helpful information about the location of fish and the best bait to use. Our goals are to provide you with a memorable nature experience, teach you about kayak fishing in the Outer Banks and to have you hooked up and grinning ear to ear during your trip with us.

Beginning on August 15, 2008, our kayaks are 2009
Ocean Kayak Trident 13' Angler models outfitted with top quality seats (gel and high density foam with high back support) for maximum comfort. We provide the instruction and gear you will need to fish for Speckled Trout, Flounder, Striped Bass (Rockfish), Red Drum (Redfish), Black Drum, Croaker or Spot, depending on the bite that day. Each trip is about three hours of fishing and may involve meeting the guide at one of several launch points within ten miles of Kitty Hawk. A North Carolina fishing license is required and may be purchased in advance online.  Minimum age is 12 years. No previous experience is required. We will make every effort to  tailor each trip to the experience level (angling and paddling) of the group. In most cases, we will pair more experienced participants together. Prior to meeting, your guide will speak with you to advise you on what to wear and what to bring with you. PLease review our trip checklist below prior to meeting your guide.

The three hour fishing trip cost is $125 per person with a two person minimum charge ($250) up four anglers maximum. Full days are $225 per person, again with a two person minimun charge ($450). We will consider up to six if its a group that is together and requests it. Your guide's qualifications, local knowledge, angling expertise and dedication to giving each angler a memorable kayak fishing experience puts him or her in an elite class of Outer Banks kayak fishing guide. The charge is not reduced for using your own equipment. The Outer Banks Fishing School's new, state-of-the-art-equipment is available!

30 SPF Sunblock
30 SPF lip balm

We recommend you use the bathroom before you meet your guide. We dont encourage people to go into the water but in an emergency, its an option but ...PLEASE, FOR SAFETY, NOTIFY YOUR GUIDE IF YOU NEED TO ENTER THE WATER. USE THE WHISTLE ON YOUR PFD LIFEJACKET. WE PROMSE HE WONT PEEK!!! Most launching locations do not have bathrooms.

Your guide will have a first aid kit. If you have problem..use the whistle.

Even if you have your own equipment, your guide will provide you with a the terminal tackle (lures or bait) you will need for the day.

If your kayak tips over, don't panic, its ok. However, be sure your guide sees you (use the whistle) and realize that anything that isnt tied down will be lost so secure your items and our fishing rods!

Tipping is not required but it is customary to give 15% or more to your guide if you are happy with his/her effort.

We will host a private tournament each fall for our customers. Please watch the website and be sure to send us an email after your trip so we have your feedback and the email address.

Please be sure to complete the trip sign-up sheet so we are aware of any special circumstances.
